BLACK BUSH-BASHING HEATS UP: Cheadle, Magic Johnson jump in, Sharpton, Jay-Z continue criticism.(September 9, 2005)
*During a luncheon in Beverly Hills Wednesday, Earvin “Magic” Johnson summed up his view of the President’s Hurricane Katrina response in four words: “Bush is a travesty.” "The White House let us all down - both blacks and whites," Johnson said at Rev. Al Sharpton's Dream Keepers Luncheon, joining a number of leading African Americans who are outraged over the federal government’s slow response in providing relief efforts to the devastated region. "Hotel Rwanda" star Don Cheadle, also at the luncheon, said that "the dogs are piling on the President," then added, "I'm cool with it. I'm one more on the dog pile. How Bush handled this was an embarrassment." "Bush sat there and fiddled in Crawford while New Orleans drowned," Sharpton said. "If someone had told him that it was heading to West Palm Beach, Fla., he would have stopped everything." Meanwhile Jay-Z, in London to pick up British GQ's International Man of the Year Award, reiterated his comments made days earlier to Billboard magazine, during which he "100% supported" Kanye West’s statement: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” "When you're the commander in chief, you're responsible," Jigga said. "Maybe it's the mayor or the governor to blame. But when you are the boss, it comes down on you." Speak Out
